Google Cracks Down on Directories

Oct-1st-2008

Well for those of you who run a directory, you may have noticed that Google is starting to crack down on your directory now.

First off, they seem to be penalizing more and more directories every update, with directories losing PageRank all the time. Directories seem to be getting initial PageRank and then later on, losing it. Although this probably isn’t the most important, it will mean a lot less sales of paid links because people buy the links because of the high PR. That means less people will be earning money from them, less directories in general.

Second of all, they also seem to be taking methods to making the links from directories worthless. We have recently noticed that most of the links from directories have been ignored by Google now (Confirmed by them) so the links won’t help SEO at all. A very clever method that Google have taken - to stop people submitting in the first place.

It seems quite strange how Google are penalizing directories when they initially said that directories are allowed and that Webmasters are allowed to sell links on them because of the work taken on the directory. Maybe it is just Google making it more difficult for users to build links once again.
