Official Cuil Review

Sep-29th-2008

As you may have already heard of it, Cuil is a new, upcoming Search Engine created by some ex-Google Staff. You can find it at Cuil.com. It seems to have taken off very well and is getting a lot of visitors. Can it compare to the likes of Google?

First off, the index is certainly not good. The MiloFi site has over 25,000 backlinks, and isn’t even indexed at all. There are a lot of good quality, well-known websites not indexed at all. They say they have 121 billion pages indexed. Well, most of them must be spam pages or just the owners of Cuil uploading a 120 billion website to up the number.

Secondly, the Search Engine doesn’t even use simple commands such as site: to show the pages indexed by the Search Engine. You try site:google.com and the results aren’t even from Google.com… This is something used by most Search Engines, yet not Cuil.

Thirdly, one of the most important things is the amount of traffic Cuil sends to visitors. Somebody else who ranks #1 for a good keyword got his first visitor from Cuil after several weeks. This obviously means that Cuil isn’t sending much traffic at all, nobody seems to be clicking results from it.

However, the good thing about the Search Engine is that it actually looks quite nice. It displays the results in a unique way. It should really display more results per page, but it works well.

In conclusion, although Cuil looks good, it has a very small index compared to Google, and most of the pages are probably spam. It doesn’t send much traffic either. If Cuil is going to compare up to Google, it has a lot of work to do. Cuil is around at the stage of Google around 8 - 10 years ago, still upcoming.
