Unlimited and Unmetered Resources

Jul-31st-2008

Some hosts these days seem to be offering Unlimited or Unmetered Space or Bandwidth.

Although they sound very similar, there is a small difference.

Unlimited means that they just have no limits. It is often used to get extra Customers, but infact you don’t get unlimited resources, because obviously nobody can give this. Just think to yourself, do you have an unlimited space Hard Drive? What they do give you is Hosting, but once you use so much that they’d probably lose money from it, or less profits, then they will just suspend your Hosting Account and give you a silly reason for it.

Unmetered means that they just don’t measure the resources. This was used as an alternative when users realised that they couldn’t get what they were paying for. Unmetered is used quite often in Dedicated Servers now, but some Shared Hosts still provide it.

Whereas Unlimited and Unmetered seems a good idea because of the resources you think that you’ll get, it is often used to give you a small amount of resources, and if you reach any higher, you’ll lose the account. You must think though that you can’t expect such as 100GB of space for $6.99 a month or so. Some hosts do actually give you unlimited or unmetered though, but the opportunities for these companies have been ruined by the masses of companies who claim to offer this but don’t. This has led to many big Webmaster forums to disallow the advertising of these companies.

In conclusion, it probably is best to avoid these Unlimited and Unmetered companies, because if you’re planning to use a lot of resources, you’ll definately run into problems.
